Potting Bench – Height and Size

Before you buy or build your potting bench, you want to measure the ideal height.  The perfect height is going to around waist height so that you don’t have to put any undue strain on your back by stooping down or working with your shoulders raised.

The when working the ideal height should have you comforatable and able to work for longer.

When it comes to how wide you want your bench, consider what you will be doing at it the most.  Are you potting large plants or small, do you need to store things nearby or can they be in a draw.  You also want to consider an area that is clean that can be used for noting information or keeping a record of the plants that you are working with.

Having this additional space will help to keep eveything in order.

One last thing to consider is a source of water.  While having a tap at your potting table may be a luxury for some, others find it extremely important.  So if you don’t have a tap nearby, you may want to consider installing it in your table.

Garden Work Table

When deciding on your garden work bench or table, you want to consider the materials that it will be made of.  The most popular choice is wood, but for those living in very humid climates, you may want to consider some alternatives to wood.

Recycled plastic is a great way to have a structure that is sturdy and weather resistant that you know is going to last you a lifetime.  The other great advantage of recycled plastic is that it’s relatively inexpensive and you’ll be doing your bit for the planet.

Another alternative to consider is a metal potting bench.  They will get hot if in direct sunlight, so take that into considertion.  The advantages include that they can be hosed off when you’re done and they won’t rust or corrode.  Over time, they don’t generally look as warn and will last a lifetime.

Potting Table – What to Look For

When looking for a potting bench or table, you will want to make sure that you know exactly what area and space you will have available and what specifically you want to use it for.

Lets look at the area that you are going to be working in.  If you are putting your potting table in a greenhouse and you want to use the work area not just as a workbench, but also as a lay area for your plants, then the top will have to be bigger workspace without a backing area.  This will allow you to store more products like soil and fertilizer as well as empty pots below.  You may even have enough space to put your composter or your mulsh if the are is large enough.

For this kind of setup a simple table is often the best option.  Deciding on the material that your bench is to be made of will depend in your environment.  Treated wood is often the most popular, being both functional and an attractive piece of furniture.

The more conventional design will include a back where you can either put a trellis to hang your garden tools, or cubbies, draws or shelves.  These are best suited standing against a wall, but no matter where you want to locate your potting table or bench, you want to have enough space to do everything you need to with all your equipment at hand.

For most people the main function of a potting table is a work area to complete tasks such as transplanting seedlings and potting new plants.  Make sure that the workbench that you choose is at a very comfortable hight so that you don’t strain your back.

Lastely you want to make sure that you potting bench is either portable or standing.  This will depend on if you need it to be moved around and stored away from the working area.  If you have to store it for example in a greenhouse or a potting shed, make sure that you have an easy access point and that it is small enough to get through the door.
